The theory behind this chart:

A) Engineering modules are important to all designs and should be stocked at all times in the shops. Half are produced automatically and the other half are produced on request. Warps are produced mainly in the lower techs because they are vital to younger ships, while impulses are much more useful when they are higher tech.

B) Science modules are generally produced in alternating techs, with an emphasis on sensors for younger ships and cloaks for older ships.

C) Only 1/3 of medical modules should be kept in the shops due to realistic demand considerations, but these should be strategically spaced out over the tech ranges. Most people simply will not buy magic medical modules, and most people that carry significant numbers of sickbays can get a desirable percentage by using primitive and advanced tech shop modules in addition to the other techs they will pick up by other means.

D) Shields are desirable at just about every tech range, but primitive modules are arguably too weak to be effective.

E) Weapons production is concentrated on the types that are the most popular and/or the most useful at various stages of development. At the same time, much consideration is given to those who want to produce exotic designs. The long range weapons are produced in the greatest variety and quantity because they are useful for many different designs. Mid range weapons are concentrated on the highest tech levels but are available for production at the basic and mediocre level, and the close range weapons are concentrated in the mid high tech. This arrangement offers the best available mix for a variety of ship designs while seriously cutting the number of module types that must be maintained in the shops.

F) Primitive modules have limited usefulness and due to their massive erosion rate should be kept to minimum production levels. Since these must still be widely scattered to be useful to the newbies, we maintain adequate stocks of the items that make sense, reject requests for the items that do not make sense, and accept requests for items that could still be needed for skill improvement. Cutting production here will make it much easier to maintain useful levels of the more desirable modules.

G) Basic modules should be available in a wide variety of types due to the restrictive production on primitive. The goal here is to produce enough so that early development is not overly difficult despite the lack of varied primitive items.

H) Mediocre and advanced modules should be readily available in key areas and we are open to requests to encourage more rapid development at this stage.

I) Exotic and magic tech should be somewhat less available. People have to be extremely certain that they want to spend 3200 on a magic module, and by the time ships reach the high tech ranges they have less difficulty acquiring the remaining modules they need through adventuring and combat.

J) Requests for lower tech items should be given greater priority as long as the requests make sense and do not fall on items that we simply do not produce.
